The strap and back of the bag are well padded and have proven durable enough for me. The strap also can be attached on either the left or right side to accommodate your preference. The unused side tucks neatly into the lumbar section of the bag and actually adds a little padding. In addition to the MOLLE attachment points found on the sides and front of the bag there are also several points along the shoulder strap and on the hip. A small pouch with elastic retainer is found on the top of the strap that will easily accommodate any size cellular device (except maybe the larger 'phablets'). I used the pocket to carry a backup device charger and small USB drive.
A Y-strap is located on the bottom of the bag that works well to attach a small jacket. It can also be used as a compression strap, but the ability to lash a bedroll or coat to the bottom of the bag is the strap's best use. Also on the bottom of the bag is a drainage grommet to help dry out in case of any leakage or condensation of internal contents such as hydration bladder.
Underneath the strap, there is a compartment accessible from either side via zipper. The compartment is just the right size for a small book or possibly tablet. The compartment also gives access to a small hard panel that is used for rigidity of the pack. The purpose of this compartment is to hold a hydration bladder, which attaches near the top with a velcro strap and the hose feeds out the top back of the compartment.
The main compartment has a pouch with drawstring closure that easily holds extra socks, gloves, buff, and solar charger. On the opposite side of the main compartment, mesh compartments 2 layers deep create 2 pockets on top and bottom with velcro closure. In addition, behind the velcro compartments, a large zippered compartment is found. The zippered compartment is useful to hold papers and documents and can be accessed easily after opening the main compartment.
The front pocket of the bag attaches with velcro closures at the top of the pocket to the main bag in order to create a hidden pocket that would work nicely to hold a small handgun, tablet, or checkbook and keep it out of sight. This compartment has two grenade pouch sized pockets with elastic bands to hold larger objects. The side near the main compartment holds small and medium sized journal and notebooks, pens, pencils, and two pen-style bug and hand sanitizer sprays.
